PMOG

I wanted to point everyone to a fun little game that I’ve been passively playing over the past week: PMOG

PMOG (Passively Multiplayer Online Game) is a game that you play while you’re doing your business as usual on the web. Like a traditional pen-and-paper RPG, you have experience points (called datapoints here), levels, weapons, armor, classes, etc.

You start out as a ’shoat’ (which I just recently found out was a British form of ‘piglet’), and as you use your tools, and take missions, you slowly change your alliances to other classes in the system.

You can find a full description of everything over at The Codex. It is a very rich and entertaining experience.

You get badges for visiting certain sites enough times, using tools, and inviting people. You can take missions, which lead you to all corners of the internet, giving you more DP, and hopefully teaching you something along the way. (check out my generated missions on my profile page: slyde)

Even though this just recently came out of beta, it has been a fairly polished experience, and I am happy that I have gotten involved. Check it out!

Updates

Alright, admittedly, it’s been way too long since I’ve last blogged. I have a couple of stories coming up that should be a good read, including a Book Review.

Last weekend, we went to Ohio once again, to see ‘Damn Yankees’ at the Carousel Dinner Theatre. As always, the food was delicious, and the performance was good. This makes me wish that we did have a dinner theatre in this area, as it is a wonderful experience.

On Friday, we got to go again to the ‘Longhorn Steakhouse’, which is always a treat. Saturday morning, we went to a flea market (Amish or Mennonite), and had a wonderful time checking out the wares. We got a little something for everyone, and decided to make plans to return later in the year to complete our Christmas shopping.

After the flea market, we got to go swimming and spend time in the hot tub. This was very good, because Myriah’s knees were really hurting that day. We rested a bit and got ready for the dinner theatre.

The next day was basically breakfast and travel. We took the Pennsylvania Turnpike on the way home this time, and shaved almost 2 hours off of our trip.

I’ve been extremely hard at work the past week, trying to meet a deadline. Nothing like a good solid deadline to make you say ‘holy shit! I haven’t been working efficiently enough!’.

Art Gallery Online

A quick version of my Art Gallery is now online. It’s a very simple system, just click on a thumbnail, it enlarges, and then use your left and right arrows to navigate through the gallery.

Right now, it’s all on one page, so it might take a while to load. If I get a chance later on, I will work on some other kind of system for it.

Enjoy!

Goals / Streamlining

Over the past few weeks, I have been shunning a lot of my responsibilities in exchange for what feels good, or whatever kind of time wasting I can achieve. My work and blogging both suffer from this.

I came across a new service, RescueTime, which allows me to track my PC usage, and categorize the programs/sites that I use on a daily basis so I can tell how much time I’ve wasted today.

There is a program that you download (Official releases for Mac and Windows, and a third-party Linux build), and sign up on the website, and you’re good to go. It tracks which programs are running, and through a browser extension, you can find out which web pages you’ve been visiting the most.

Another great feature is the ability to set goals in the system. I’ve set two goals:

  1. More than 8 hours work per weekday
  2. More than 30 minutes of blogging per day (7/week)

When I’ve reached the threshold of these goals, the service will notify me via email that I’ve exceeded the time set by myself.

These goals might seem a bit ridiculous, but they’re based in a reality in which I would like to live. I want to be able to devote a true 8 hours a day to my work, so that I can be better responsible to my job and my employers. Also, I would like to try to get this blog up and going with regular posts about various things, so if I put in a measly half hour everyday, maybe I can generate some more traffic.

I guess really my problem is content. I haven’t really provided anything exciting for everyone, but my plans are vaguely set out for the future.

If I can finagle it, I am going to put some sort of widget for everyone to see how much time I’ve put into each project anytime they log into the blog. This will also help me create a sense of accountability, because otherwise I look like I can’t reach my goals on a regular basis.

If you’re in a similar situation, you really should check out RescueTime, and give it a try for a while.

Doom 4

A wonderful, exciting and unexpected announcement graced the front page of id Software’s website today.

That’s right! They are beginning production on Doom 4. The NewDoom Community is abuzz with this great news.

There is so much potential for them to get things right this time around. Doom 3 was often spoken of as the bastard cousin of the original, spectacular Doom series. It was way too dark, not enough outside areas, etc.

They can really win back the Doom fan base that is still going quite strong despite the 15+ years since the original was released. From the looks of some of the mod community’s projects, what Doomers really want is a faithful, yet updated release.

At the bottom of the post on the id Software website, is a call for talented people to sign onto the team and work on this monumental game. If only I had experience and more skill, I would shoot my resume their way.

A Confederacy of Dunces [Book Review]

This is my first book review, so bear with me.  When I had the idea to do a book review, I was taken back to a time in my life when I was forced to read books that were boring, and give reports on them, or take chapter tests.  As a result, I was stunted in my reading skills and my desire to read anything outside of school.

Lately, though, I have been finding quite a few interesting topics to read about, and am slowly moving through the tons of books that we have in our library, one tome at a time.

When we were in Ohio, I finished A Confederacy of Dunces, and I think it’s about time to write a review.

History of Obtaining The Book
Myriah had heard that this was one of the funniest books ever written, and got it for me through Quality Paperback Book Club. (As an aside, we really do have a ‘book problem’, our library grows every day, and we probably should not belong to such a club, but it’s hard to change a habit such as this)  I did not start reading it until I was finished Sandworms of Dune. (Maybe I will eventually do a mega-review of the entire Dune Series.)

The Book
Starting out, after reading the forward–which said that you have to read the entire book to the end in order to understand all of the concepts–reading was a little slow.  It was hard to get past the complete bafoonery of every character involved.

It wasn’t until about 1/3 of the way through the book that I realised I was having a genuinely good time reading it.  It was strange, the book was funny, but it was more like I was laughing constantly on the inside, while remaining perfectly stolid on the outside.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page thereafter, and the final payoff was definitely worth it.  The running jokes in the novel created a sense that it was completely unbelievable for them to intertwine, but the author did so, and it really was amazing.

Strange Thoughts of Self
One thing I got out of this book was a strange bit of self-comparison to the main character.  Ignatius J. Reilly is an intelligent fellow who graduated from college and then just stopped everything.  He spends his time in his room, door locked, contemplating our society and all of its pitfalls.  It’s not until his mother runs into a house in her car that he has to go out into the real world and become a working man.

He is so utterly ridiculous, and is offended by anything and everything which he perceives as an affront to all common decency.

Now, I don’t see myself like that, but I do see myself as someone who had such great potential, only to disconnect themselves from the world and disappear from the surface altogether.  I started this blog because of reading this book, because I could see myself getting more and more disconnected from the real world.  I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in my own head.

Final Verdict
This book is an absolute must-read.  I would wholly recommend this to anyone who would like an intelligent long-term laugh.

9/10
